Walking Workplaces is all about getting more active - and having some fun along the way!
Can you increase your clean and green activity, help the environment, help your team climb the leaderboard and earn rewards for yourself too?
Please see our Frequently Asked Questions below and get in touch if the answer you're looking for isn't there.
What is the Walking Workplaces challenge?
Waking Workplaces is a free leaderboard and rewards programme designed to help you get active. By taking part you will help your team to climb the leaderboard, and at the same time your active journeys will earn you individual rewards.
How has Walking Workplaces been funded?
The Walking Workplaces challenge is funded by Paths for All.
Why should I take part?
BetterPoints is an award-winning app that encourages people to get walk, run, wheel, cycle and take public transport more, for commuting purposes or leisure. Taking part will allow you to earn rewards for travelling in active and environmentally friendly ways. You can support local traders and charities with the BetterPoints you earn. The secure and anonymised data your participation provides will also help Paths for all to improve their programmes, helping to make Scotland a cleaner, greener, more liveable county for everyone.
Which workplaces can take part?
You must be a staff member (or student) of one of the following workplaces:
- NHS Ayreshire & Arran
- NHS Dumfries & Galloway
- NHS Shetland
- Dumfries & Galloway College
- University of the West of Scotland
You will need a referral code to enter the challenge.
Where do I find the referral code?
Please contact customercare@betterpoints.uk and let us know which organisation you work or study at.
Can I create my own team?
No, you can only join one of the teams above - all colleagues from each workplace will compete against the other workplaces on the leaderboard.
How will the winning team be measured?
Because there are different numbers of staff at each of the workplaces, the winning team will be measured by the average number of activities (based on the number of staff from each workplace who have joined up).
Is the Step Count Challenge the same as the BetterPoints app Walking Workplaces challenge?
No, these are separate initiatives, but are working to do the same thing - encouraging colleagues to get out and active! The Step Count Challenge is based on the number of steps you can do each day, and uses a step counter / step counting app which you will use to enter your information. The BetterPoints app records your journeys and automatically allocates points or tickets per minute for activities. Rewards and prizes will be awarded directly through the BetterPoints app.
While these are separate initiatives, both of them reward walking in different ways, so the more walking you do, the better you will do in both initiatives!
Can I use the BetterPoints app to record my steps for the Step Count Challenge?
No, the BetterPoints app doesn't count steps. You will need to use a specific step counting device or app for the Step Count Challenge.
What is the difference between BetterTickets and BetterPoints?
BetterPoints can be earned by tracking eligible activities - over time they add up. Your points balance appears in the menu on the left of the app. Once you’ve collected enough points you can redeem them against vouchers in the catalogue on the app or donate them to charity. Every 1,000 BetterPoints are worth £1.
BetterTickets are prize draw entries earned for doing a specific activity. The tickets you earn automatically enter you into relevant prize draws. The more tickets you earn, the more chance you have of winning.
Note: NHS Dumfries & Gallowway staff can only earn BetterTickets into twice-weekly prize draws. There is more detail on this in the app when you join.
Can I take part if I use a wheelchair, and if so, how do I record my journeys?
Yes! All kinds of wheelchairs can be recorded as 'wheeling' in our app. Due to the motion sensors inbuilt in your device, and our algorithms in the app, it may assume you are cycling, rather than wheeling. In your timeline, after completing your journey, you will be able to amend this to wheeling and your journey will be updated. You will be awarded the same amount of points/tickets as walking, running or cycling journeys.
I have signed up to BetterPoints, but I'm not seeing the Walking Workplaces leaderboard challenge, or earning points or tickets. Why?
The most likely reason is that the referral code was not applied correctly, but we can help with this!

How do I earn leaderboard points for my team?
- Any active journey (walk/wheel, cycle e-bike) over 15 minutes will count as 1 point towards the leaderboard (max 6 points per day).
- An active journey (walk/wheel, cycle e-bike) over 15 minutes that is to or from your place work will count as 2 points (up to twice a day).
- You can earn up to 8 leaderboard points a day.
- The leaderboard will show Total Rewarded Activities per team, number of Members in each team, as well as Average Rewarded Activities per team.
- The average will be calculated based on the number of staff who have joined on each team (rather than the total potential workforce size).
- The winning metric will be Average Rewarded Activities.
